Surf the Basin 2025: Big Waves, Big Shakas at the Agana Boat Basin

On Saturday, December 6, 2025, the ocean showed up in a big way for Surf the Basin 2025 at the Agana Boat Basin in Hagatña, Guam. With clean, powerful waves rolling into the basin and sunny island weather, it was the kind of day every surfer and bodyboarder hopes for.

Hosted by Guahan Napu Inc. (GNI), Surf the Basin is one of Guam’s most exciting and unique surf competitions. The event doesn’t happen on a fixed date. Instead, it runs on a competition window, meaning the contest is held on the first day when the waves are just right. This year, December 6 was the perfect call—and the ocean delivered.

A Special Wave, A Special Place

The Agana Boat Basin is not a regular beach break. It’s a man-made harbor that turns into a powerful wave when the swell, tide, and wind all line up. When that happens, the wave bends into the basin and creates fast, hollow sections that reward skill, timing, and courage.

These conditions are exciting to watch, but they also demand respect. Surfers and bodyboarders must read the wave carefully, choose the right line, and commit fully. That’s what makes Surf the Basin so special—it tests real ocean knowledge, not just tricks.

Strong Community Turnout

From early morning, the basin was buzzing with energy. Competitors checked in, warmed up, and watched the waves closely. Friends, family, and fellow watermen lined the rocks and shoreline, cheering on every good ride.

Registration was available the day before or on the morning of the event. Entry fees were $30 for GNI members and $40 for non-members, and every competitor received a competition shirt—something many surfers proudly keep as a memory of the day.

Divisions That Showed True Talent

The contest featured Open Surfing, Open Bodyboarding, and Women’s Surfing divisions. Each one brought its own style and excitement.

Open Surfing showed strong turns, deep wave knowledge, and confident rides in powerful sections.
Top finishers were:

  1. Jared Gogue

  2. Noa Mendiola

  3. Pono Auld

Open Bodyboarding was fast, technical, and thrilling to watch. Riders used speed and positioning to get the most out of the hollow waves, pulling into tight sections and exiting clean.
Top finishers were:

  1. John Barber

  2. Jonathan Leon Guerrero

  3. James Song

Women’s Surfing highlighted smooth style, smart wave choices, and strong confidence in challenging conditions.
Top finishers were:

  1. Minami Cramer

  2. Kylie Baker

  3. Sarah Wilkinson

Each division showed that Guam’s surf community is full of talent, respect for the ocean, and love for the sport.

More Than Just a Contest

Surf the Basin is not just about winning. It’s about bringing the community together, respecting the ocean, and keeping Guam’s surf culture strong. Events like this teach younger surfers how to compete safely, support each other, and understand local surf spots.

Guahan Napu Inc. continues to play an important role in protecting and growing Guam’s surfing future—one well-timed swell at a time.
