Guam’s Amphibious Aquatics Shines at Swim League Philippines Meet, Securing 2nd Place Overall

Guam swimmers bring home over 56 medals, showcasing grit and skill at international competition.

Manila, Philippines – April 4, 2023 – The Guam Amphibious Aquatics Swim Team made an impressive showing at the Swim League Philippines Summer Swim Splash meet, winning the 2nd place high point team trophy and earning over 56 medals. The competition took place at the state-of-the-art Muntinlupa Aquatic Center in the Philippines, featuring 300 athletes from 27 teams across Malaysia and the Philippines.

All 18 Guam swimmers achieved new personal records, including standout performances by Mia Lee, John Moore IV, and Keana Santos, who made a triumphant return to the Philippine competition. Guam swimmers were awarded 24 golds, 21 silver, and 11 bronze medals, with athletes Amaya Bollinger, Tanom Camacho, Olivia Dierking, Tayvia Dierking, Logan Gandaoli, Miles Horton, Nina Lee, and Naiatea Wooley also taking first place in their respective heats.

Head Coach Andy Lee praised the team’s determination and dedication: “Amphibious Aquatics continues to provide opportunities for Guam athletes to compete and demonstrate grit, skill, and their commitment to the sport.” Lee also thanked the community partners, athletes’ families, and the Swim League Philippines for their support.

The Junior Amphibious Training Program (JATP) played a crucial role in the athletes’ preparation for the international competition. Launched in January 2023, the 12-week program focused on technique, conditioning, and youth empowerment, encompassing water safety, rescue skills, leadership development, study skills, test preparation, yoga, meditation, and strength training.

Two-time Olympian and Amphibious Coach Chris Dueñas stressed the importance of hosting swim meets on Guam to enhance local athletes’ growth and experience. Dueñas acknowledged the need for better facilities, urging for the reopening of the Hagåtña pool to benefit the entire community.

The Swim League Philippines President, Coach Fred Galang Ancheta, expressed gratitude for the Guam swimmers’ participation, stating: “It’s always a great experience connecting with Guam swimmers, and we look forward to visiting your beautiful island in the future with our Philippine teams.”
