Theme: Celebrating Light and Culture with Guam & Japan

November GOLD is more than just a celebration; it’s part of the Sling Outreach Program, designed to encourage Japanese travelers to rediscover Guam as a vibrant, welcoming destination. Through shared cultural experiences and engaging workshops, the program seeks to restore confidence in traveling to Guam, promoting the island as a prime destination for Japanese visitors.

Sling Workshop: Reviving an Ancient Tradition

In addition to the November GOLD event, the Sling Outreach Program will host a special sling workshop at the Japanese School of Guam on November 24th. This workshop will introduce participants to the art and history of sling use on Guam, an age-old skill integral to Chamorro culture. The sling has historically served as a symbol of strength, survival, and skill on the island, used by ancient Chamorros for hunting and protection. By sharing this knowledge, we’re fostering cultural appreciation and ensuring that these important traditions are passed down and preserved.

Taking Chamorro Culture to Japan

Following the event on Guam, the Sling Outreach Program will travel to Japan to host a sling instructional workshop for a Japanese group committed to promoting Chamorro culture. This initiative reflects the program’s dedication to cultural exchange and education, sharing Guam’s unique heritage with the broader world. In this workshop, participants will learn the art of slinging, gaining insight into its historical and cultural significance while also supporting the movement to keep Guam’s traditions alive and appreciated internationally.

Guam’s Legacy as a Destination of Warmth and Hospitality

Guam has long been known for its hospitality, welcoming visitors with open arms and an open heart. Through events like November GOLD, the island continues to uphold its reputation as a cultural destination that respects and celebrates diversity. The exchange between Guam and Japan, facilitated through the Sling Outreach Program, is a testament to the enduring friendship between our communities and our commitment to cultural preservation and sharing.

Join us on November 16th to experience the warmth, light, and culture that define Guam and Japan, and let’s celebrate our shared heritage and mutual respect. We look forward to seeing you at November GOLD!
