A Global Connection Through the Sling
Hosting Luis Ponz on Guam is akin to a basketball fan getting to play with Michael Jordan—a dream come true for slinging enthusiasts. Chamorro slingers, including Roman Dela Cruz and Guelo Rosario, have spent years honing the art and connecting with the global slinging scene. Their hard work paid off when Guam dominated international competitions, taking home victories against traditional Balearic slingers for the first time.
Slinging is more than just a sport for Chamorros—it’s a deep-rooted part of their warrior identity, a tradition that has lasted for thousands of years. The åcho’ atupat, or slingstone, remains a key symbol of the island’s strength, even featured prominently on the Guam flag, the only national flag in the world showcasing this ancient weapon.
Guam’s Slinging Movement: From the Past to the Future
Ever since Dela Cruz and Rosario first competed in Mallorca, Spain, in 2017, slinging has exploded in popularity across the island. Today, Guam boasts 500-600 proficient slingers and thousands more enthusiasts picking up the skill.
“For anybody out there who’s mahålang (homesick) for Guam, or if you have Chamorro roots and have never been to Guam, connect with the slingstone. Let it mean something to you, let it mean a lot to you—and then move forward from there,” says Dela Cruz.
Slinging has come full circle, with Guam now setting the standard for slinging worldwide. The island is becoming the model for how slinging can be revived, taught, and practiced globally. With Luis Ponz here, Guam will have the chance to showcase its Fokai Spirit and further cement its place at the forefront of the global slinging movement.
More Than Just a Clinic—A Cultural Homecoming
Luis Ponz’s visit also coincides with CHamoru Month, making his presence even more meaningful. In addition to the March 8 clinic, he will take part in:
🏆 March 15: District Championship
🏆 March 16: Heritage Cup Guam at Sagan Kotturan CHamoru in Tamuning
These events will celebrate the resurgence of Chamorro slinging while continuing to bridge the connection between Guam and the international slinging community.
